Welcome to the "burbs"...

I lovingly refer to our neighborhood as the "burbs" because, well...it is the "burbs". I'm almost completely positive that we are the only house within at least a 30 home radius, not inclusive of empty nesters, that don't have kiddos. Because we don't fall into the current format of our fellow neighborhood inhabitants, I thought we should try and be a bit more "neighborly". (Not having a kid in this part of town is like not having an invitation to a party. Those little germ factories, as cute as they are, act as your Golden Ticket. No kid, no social invites.) Just the other day a perfect opportunity presented itself in the form of six new sets of neighbors. Woohoo!!! Fresh meat!
I got my butt into gear and made some tasty cookies and hand made "Welcome to the Neighborhood" cards.
Even though the thought of failing was definitely in the front of my mind I needed to at least do this to prove to myself that my current set of social skills were somewhat permissible in most situations. With cookies in hand I trotted over to the homes of all our new strangers, uh I mean neighbors, and tried not to act like someone who might have laced the treats with some sort of LSD. All-in-all, I think that my attempt to reach out and meet new people was mildly successful. This small triumph was marked by not getting a single door slammed in my face and being greeted with a smile by everyone. I also hoped that a small amount of the cookies might have actually been eaten rather than thrown away. A girl can hope right?

The never ending list of home projects are another result of living in the burbs. What, might you ask, was our "project of the week"? Painting...again. We have a long standing history with painting and not all of it's pretty, but I'll spare the gory details for now. We really wanted to bring some new life to our upstairs living area so we poured over paint swatches for hours before finally making a decision. So, with our trusty/ever so helpful assistants, Chase and Hana, we got started.

A gallon of paint and a couple hours later we were done. When we stepped back to admire all our hard work and planning, it hit us like a ton of bricks...the color was a disaster. Like I said before, we have a complicated relationship with wall paint. I see another weekend of painting in our very near future. Sigh...

Hana decided to protest against the wall color by picking a fight with it. I came back inside from the garage putting the brushes away to find this...

It looked like the wall socked her square in the eye. I'd like to think this happened because she was defending our honor against the horrid green now plastered on our walls...but I'm pretty sure she just took a corner too sharply. The next day I also found the tip of her tail covered in paint too. Since welcoming Hana into our family I've learned the funny lesson that black dogs are like black cars...no matter how clean they really are they manage to always look dirty.

In memorandum of my sweet Elka, we planted a beautiful young peach tree. It just finished blooming and has already started growing small peaches. Pretty sure we won't be able to eat any of the fruit this year, but I'm excited to watch it grow and hopefully thrive.

I planted in a large pot for this season so that I can keep an extra close eye on it's health and well-being. It is a little too delicate to fend for itself against the heat this year so having it in a pot will enable me to bring it into the shade or shelter when needed.
Elka always loved sitting under any tree she could find and just "watch" the goings on of the world around her. It was impossible to get outside to do yard work without her protesting disappointment when you didn't allow her to participate. There were many times that she would sit under the shade of the trees and become so comfortable that you literally had to mow around her. Elka was never accused of being a push-over...but I think that was one of her most outstanding and favorable qualities.

I think that she would have liked this little tree...

A birthday wish for her...

"Not the least hard thing to bear when they go from us, these quiet friends, is that they carry away with them so many years of our own lives." ~John Galsworthy

I can't believe that 10 years ago today my best friend was born...time sure does get away from you when you're busy making plans and living life. It honestly feels like just the other day I was sitting on the living room floor of Cary's house after a long day at work and wondering what I had gotten myself in to.

Puppies were climbing, barking, and making the most adorable fools of themselves.
The situation lent itself to the idea of heaven for most dog lovers.
There was nothing that I could do but soak it all up!

Cary, Elka's breeder, wasn't your run of the mill kind of guy. He is special and holds a sincere love and devotion to those he cares for...especially GSD's. From what I can recall he had adopted Elka's mother, Berlin, along with Elka's father, Kodiak, and two other adult GSD's from a reputable breeder whom was looking to retire. Not knowing that Berlin was "with child/puppies" Cary agreed to take all four of the big dogs under his wing and give them the best life possible. By now, you can logically grasp what happened in the following months.

He found that his once quiet home had quickly become over run with these bouncing and biting bundles of joy...and all anyone could do was smile and laugh because no other reaction was fitting or possible.
It was chaos and unbridled love rolled into one...

While I found myself sitting on that living room floor, and trying my best to come to a "logical" decision about a new found companion, it hit me..."How in the world was I going to be responsible enough to care for another life when I could barely take care of myself?". Yes, I had a great job and a super cute place to call my own but how in the heck would I be able contribute to an animal that would surely surpass my mental acuity before their first birthday?
I thought I'd be sunk for sure...

That's when it happened. I finally made my choice on an adorable petite female pup that wore a thin grey ribbon around her neck. She seemed quite spirited and very well versed in projecting the "cuteness personified" look. However, Cary had someone else in mind. He insisted that the puppy with the thin gray ribbon wasn't for me. Instead, he passed over a rolly-polly black clump of fur that wore a thick green ribbon all while voicing his conviction about his choice for me. He said "this is the dog for you.". Up to this point I'd only spent about 2 hours total with Cary before that fateful evening. Now, here he was handing over this furry lump of dog that didn't seem the least bit interested in me and asserting that she belonged in my life. Never the less, my gut allowed me to trust Cary almost instantly upon our first meeting so the decision was pretty much already made. It seemed to us both that Elka had chosen me even though I hadn't originally chosen her.
This proved to be one of the most pivotal moments in my life
and by far one of the best examples of trust I'd ever allowed.
I knew from that moment on, my little world
was going to get a whole lot more interesting.

Looking back on that day, I couldn't have dreamt for a more perfectly matched companion. Nor could I have aspired to learn as much as what she taught me. She forced me to become a better person and made me realize more about life and love than I will ever admit to a single soul. She was my partner and my professor for almost 10 years and I honestly wouldn't change any of it. (Except for the obvious limitation on our time together.)

My birthday wish for Elka is that I hope I was able to teach her at least a fraction of what she taught me while we were a team of two.

She was breathtaking, defiant, compelling, and loyal to the very end. Happy Birthday my sweet friend. You are missed beyond expression.

Some downtown fun...

I wish I could say that we spent more time in downtown, but due to the nature of daily life we don't go as often as we would like. Imagine my excitement when I discovered that I had two solid downtown "dates" in one week! Elation might be appropriate...
Leslie was on Spring Break from her awesome job as a kindergarten teacher, Dario was preparing to start his brand new job at the University of Phoenix and I was out of school. So, we wanted to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in a manner appropriate to our situations. Green BEER! Easier said than done because our search for a real green beer was almost completely a loss. Long story short we finally settled on a little pub just
off of 6th street and beer out of a green can...

Because it was the middle of the week, Dax wasn't able to make it out with us but we all had a great dinner together and enjoyed some fun, laughter, and games later that night.

We have a really amazing family that is patient, kind, and loves to have fun. Being able to spend so much time with them throughout the year, no matter what the occasion, really enriches our lives. (The fact that they love visiting Austin doesn't hurt either!)

This time of the year the SXSW (South by Southwest) festival swallows up our city for 10 days inclusive of film, interactive and music. An old friend named Chachi was making his way from Hollywood with his company, LP33, to attend the music portion of the events. So, Dax and I made our way downtown to partake in the "fun-ness".

We had a really great time acting like teenagers, of legal drinking age of course, listening to some amazing music and meeting new friends while catching up with old ones.

The next day Dax's best friend Nick arrived for a long weekend stay in Austin. We had a wonderful time together, and even when the weather turned cold and rainy...our weekly hike was not put on hold.

The last day of Nick's visit was beautiful so we headed to the South Congress (also called SoCo) to spend some time people watching and taking in the beautiful sunshine. We weren't disappointed...we listened to a sidewalk band that featured a man playing a saw and visited the coolest candy shop around. The smell of freshly prepared caramel and hand made
truffles was almost as intoxicating as this wonderful place we call home.

Spring Break at 31...

The phrase "Spring Break" can paint some commonly held images of debauchery and anarchy in some peoples minds. At the age of 31, a wet t-shirt competition isn't at the top of my "to-do" list. (Much to the dismay of my husband.) So instead, I did other things! Like...

Making homemade potstickers Ate obscenely large berries

Enjoyed spring breezes Tried a new pasta recipe

Refinished the upstairs deck with Hana

Celebrated St. Patrick's Day with Family

And Discovered Hana's new napping spot...

My Spring Break may not have been filled with binge drinking
or days at the beach, but I'm still one of the luckiest girls I know.
Maybe next year I'll entertain a wet t-shirt contest...or maybe not.

Spring Rescue Rally 2010!

I'm not exactly sure how many years this event has been going on, but the Austin Dog Alliance Spring Rescue Rally is more than just a mouth-full!!! Dax, Hana, and I volunteered our time to the amazing rescue group that saved our Hana's life. The German Shepherd Rescue Group Central Texas changed us forever and there is no way we could ever thank them enough. (http://www.gsdrescuectx.com/)
So whenever possible I volunteer to help out wherever they need me. This time around it was at the Rescue Rally.
Hana and I volunteered to make "Adopt Me" bandannas for the group and got started the week before the event.

This was our first official project together and we had a great time from start to finish. Think we did a pretty good job too!

We had an even better time at the rally. This was the first time the other volunteers in the group had got the chance to see Hana since her adoption back in January. It was like a little reunion of sorts and smiles were had by all...especially Hana.

Saying "hi" to Claire, Banjo, Zuri.
Northern & Ottis.

Snuggling with Claire!

There were over two dozen other rescue groups and boy was it fun! More than that it was such a heart warming sight to see so many come together as one. Everyone was there to help find "forever homes" for all the dogs in need of a second chance at life. I was surrounded by heroes and angels for an entire day and it just doesn't get much better than that.

Snow, sunshine, & a sister-in-law.

Snow found it's way to our front door last week...and it was beautiful! It's been a long time since we had the kind of snow that actually stuck, but this batch was grade-A. It fell for almost 7 hours and the pups and I enjoyed a few unbridled moments of fun outside.
Chase had a wonderful winter vacation filled with more snowflakes than could ever be counted. He loved every single moment...and we loved sharing that experience with him. However, these snowflakes may have been Hana's first. She seemed to enjoy them right alongside her big brother Chase while he showed her "the ropes".

It was a really great way to start the week!

I was lucky enough to attend a kids cooking class with Landa and Gracie on Friday and had a GREAT time! We made dumplings and they were delish!
Landa and Gracie were sweet hostesses, as usual, and really made my afternoon very special. Gracie is a super chef. Thanks again ladies!!!

Our weekend welcomed us with both sunshine and my sister-in-law Alexa. She and her "friend-boy", John, arrived on Friday afternoon with hugs and smiles galore. It was really great to see them both and we were so glad that College Station could spare them for a couple of days. ;o)

Big brother Dax and little sister Alexa enjoyed some fun on the tennis court while Hana and I watched the fun from the stands.

Dax, Chase, Hana, and I spent a few hours on Saturday afternoon doing what we love the most...being outside! The pups were particularly wild and full of spunk. It was almost like "silly" was coursing through their veins. It was blissfully fantastic and I relished in the laughter and fun.

Chase and Hana were "hambones" through and through...it doesn't get much better than that.

Special thanks to "Auntie Alexa" for spending extra time with us...it was so great seeing her!
